Розвиток культурологічної компетентності майбутніх учителів іноземних мов у педагогічній теорії і практиці США

Abstract

Резюме. У статті здійснено аналіз тенденцій і дидактичних підходів до розвитку іншомовної культурологічної компетентності майбутніх учителів іноземних мов у США. На підставі опрацювання навчальної документації програм підготовки вчителів іноземних мов, освітніх стандартів і науково-емпіричної літератури з’ясовано, що культурологічна компетентність вчителя-філолога належить до комплексу загальнопрофесійної компетентності, зокрема, методичної і в межах комунікативної – до соціокультурної та міжкультурної компетентностей. Переосмислення соціальних і професійних ролей вчителя іноземних мов зумовило включення культурознавчої компетентності до переліку всіх пунктів стандартів іншомовної освіти та деяких пунктів стандартів професійної підготовки і розвитку вчителів іноземних мов. Акцентування означеної компетентності у нормативних документах позначилось на пошуці ефективних підходів до її формування в галузі педагогічної освіти США.

Abstract. The present paper examines tendencies and mainstream didactic approaches of developing cultural competence of prospective foreign language teachers in the USA. The study involved analysis of curricula and syllabi of foreign language teacher education programs, standards for the preparation and development of language teachers, standards for foreign language learning, and relevant academic literature. Cultural foreign language teaching competence belongs to the set of general professional teaching competence. On the one hand, it forms part of methodological/linguodidactic competence, while on the other hand, it is a part of the communicative competence i.e. sociocultural and intercultural communicative competence. Reconsideration of language teachers’ social and professional roles has led to the inclusion of cultural competence in the texts of language learning and teacher preparation/ development standards. The central role of cultural teaching competence necessitates search for effective didactic approaches of equipping prospective language teachers with the knowledge and skills of teaching target language culture. In the USA the development of cultural competence of prospective language teachers takes place within the cycle of disciplines providing the foundations of theoretical knowledge about the cultural aspects of the target language community and country. To the same end, foreign language methods course aims at developing specialized body of knowledge and skills with reference to culture teaching. The two aforementioned curricular components provide student-teachers with the integrated insight into the problem of teaching culture. The results indicate steady growth of the importance of cultural component in terms of time allotted to its study and the spread of new teaching approaches in the language teacher education programs.
