Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of distance education at the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century in the conditions
of the coronavirus pandemic. The relevance of the topic is justified from the point of view of pedagogy, as is its application in the educational process.
The topic is timely for improving the quality of the educational process. The purposes of the article include giving insights into the academic literature
on distance learning, as well as highlighting its positive impacts on education processes. The works of foreign and Ukrainian scientists, outstanding
experts of the field and the topic, as well as their important scientific achievements are analyzed and emphasized. The article examines and explains
the content of the term «distance learning». The definition of a type of distance learning is given, «emergency remote teaching» (ERT). The main
differences between traditional, in-person teaching and online, distance learning are underlined. It is the physical presence that plays a crucial role,
because while in face-to-face teaching the teacher and the students are practically in the same place, in online or distance learning this disappears
as participants of the educational process might be physically hundreds and thousands of kilometres away from each other. The notion and applicability
of the «flipped classroom» is also discussed in the article. It is determined that assessment of students’ knowledge can cause real difficulties
for teachers and tutors. Marking written assignments needs special attention on the teachers’ part. Useful practical tips for teachers have been
provided based on the academic literature. It was concluded that in Ukraine, neither teachers, nor students were prepared for the unfamiliar demands
of distance learning. However, in the course of time both groups got accustomed to them and acquired the necessary skills successfully. Prospects
for further research may be focusing on e-learning and its possible implementation in tertiary education in Ukraine in normal and extreme circumstances
(e.g. in the time of war). The work is important for teachers, researchers and students studying the problems of distance learning.2023-01-01T00:00:00ZСтавлення студентів до вивчення іноземних мов під час війни в Україні

(79 %).; Abstract. The war that has raged in Ukraine for over a year and a half has profoundly
affected our students at the Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education, both physically and mentally. It was hypothesized that the war had a negative impact on students’
learning; learning a foreign language was challenging due to numerous distracting factors. Consequently,
students’ attitudes toward language learning were adversely affected. Purpose. The purpose of this study
is to gain a better understanding of what students experienced during martial law, their overall feelings
about language learning, how this challenging period influenced their attitudes toward language learning,
and the specific challenges they encountered. To achieve this, a survey was designed. Methods. An
anonymous online questionnaire was developed to gain insights into the research questions. It consisted
of three blocks of Likert-scale statements. Students had to rate the extent to which these statements were
true for them on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 meant ‘not at all true,’ and 5 meant ‘totally true.’ In total,
194 questionnaires were completed. Results. The results have revealed intriguing findings. A significant
majority of students (75%) expressed optimism, believing that wise decisions would soon be made to end
the war as soon as possible. Additionally, students expressed high levels of satisfaction with the Google
Classrooms assigned to every discipline at the college (77%) since they greatly facilitated the monitoring
of their studies. Conclusion. Students highlighted their appreciation for the opportunity to have offline
classes despite the challenging circumstances. They emphasized that language learning was significantly
more effective when there was direct contact with teachers and fellow students (79%).2023-01-01T00:00:00ZDistance learning as the new reality in tertiary education: a case study

Abstract: Abstract. The year 2020 was a horrible shock for both educators and students worldwide
because of the COVID-19 disease. The whole educational process had to undergo cardinal changes in that it was forced to transition from face-to-face to online mode. Distance
learning (DL) became the new reality in no time. This unusual situation prompted us to
conduct research on what challenges it meant for tutors to cope with the new requirements. The main goal of our case study was to get insights into the altered daily routines of tutors and understand how the system functioned. Another objective of our survey was to provide a brief synthesis of distance learning, based on the academic literature. We have applied the qualitative research design, using a semi-structured interview as a research instrument for collecting data from the respondents. The research sample consisted of thirty-four college tutors teaching language and literature (English, German, Ukrainian, and Hungarian). The participants were requested to reply to eleven questions either online or face-to-face. The results proved how unexpected and difficult it was to move from the classroom to distance education. They emphasized how crucial digital literacy is for both instructors and students. One of the essential implications is that teachers must develop their digital skills in every possible way. The next stage of our research will be to investigate what impact DL has on teachers' and students' physical and psychological well-being.2022-01-01T00:00:00ZTeaching English reading to young learners
