Abstract: The language environment of the Hungarians living in the area called Transcarpathia for nearly one hundred years has been determined by political decisions. Besides the languages minority people learn as a free choice they have to learn the state language as well that has changed several times during the last century. The present research deals with the attitude of 10-11year-old Hungarian schoolchildren to language learning in general and to the two languages they learn: to Ukrainian as a state or second language and English as a foreign language. The research aims to find out the motivation factors influencing learners in studying the two languages examined as well as the different methods used in teaching the languages and their effect on language leaning. Besides, an attempt was made to find out which language the learners are more willing to use.
